Get to know: Karen Nixon
We’re catching up with Tenmat’s Logistics Supervisor Karen Nixon to learn more about her role, what a typical day looks like, and what she enjoys doing when not at work.
Could you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?
I am the Logistics Supervisor and have been with Tenmat for one and a half years; before that I was a General Manager at Argos for 25 years.
What does your job involve?
My role involves overseeing the smooth operation of Logistics from Goods In right through to Goods Out. This includes all deliveries for the whole of the site including all the raw materials used for production as well as the very end process of ensuring we are meeting all our customers’ expectations and getting their deliveries shipped to them on time. I also oversee the collection of all the waste materials on site to ensure they are being recycled and none of the waste goes to landfill.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy all aspects of the job as no two days are the same and I love the variety each day brings.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Throughout a normal day we ensure that all the production departments have the materials and packaging they need to produce customer orders. Every day we have trailer loads of deliveries to book in which we then move into the racking until it’s needed. Sometimes we can take in over 120 pallets in one day, and at the other end of the factory we are picking and packing the orders that have been made ready to be shipped out as far as Australia and South America by road, sea, or air. In the logistics team we all work hard and care a lot about our roles – and our morale as a team is always high!
What makes Tenmat a good company to work for?
I love that Tenmat is such a diverse company to work for. Tenmat does a lot of community work which gets colleagues from across the business involved. We also have plenty of fun events work such as BBQs, Greek food days, cheeseburger days, and Spin the wheel competitions.
And finally, what do you like to get up to away from work?
My husband and I have just finished building our second extension on our home. He has taught me how to fit windows, tile a roof, and virtually everything in between – apart from the plumbing and electrics…
We also travel across the UK to watch BSB (British Superbikes). We go out on the Fireblade (motorbike) and have been to the Isle of man a few times to watch the bike racing.
